Volunteer Spotlight with Margy Rowell

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How long have you been volunteering with Heroes and Horses?

“I live on a small ranch in Lander, WY with my 3 horses and dog Sally. I’m originally from Southern California but moved to Wyoming with my daughter to care-take a 2,500-acre cattle ranch. I’ve been volunteering with Heroes and Horses for 6 years.”

How did you get started with volunteering at Heroes and Horses?

“My son-in-law was in the Army and I wanted to do something purposeful for veterans that involved horses. Heroes and Horses was a perfect fit for me. In my first year, I volunteered during (2) sessions. During that time, Micah Fink, the CEO/Founder, asked me to become the Volunteer Coordinator. At first, I said no but eventually I caved in! I’ve been the Volunteer Coordinator for 5 years now!”

What is about Heroes and Horses’s mission appeals to you?

“What appeals to me the most about the mission is that veterans have an alternative solution for healing from their experiences in the military. Those experiences do not have to define them.”

What motivates you to give back to the community with Heroes and Horses?

“I am motivated by being able to actively support veterans. I have seen firsthand the positive outcomes of this program for veterans and their families and it is truly life-changing.

How has volunteering had an impact on your life?

“Volunteering has given me a purpose in my own life. I’m part of a community/team that offers veterans a place to begin their healing from their military experiences.”

What’s your favorite thing about volunteering with Heroes and Horses?

“I absolutely love working with our volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to this organization. I love hearing their stories and what brought them to Heroes and Horses. Our volunteers are very special to us. These individuals come to Heroes and Horses on their own dime with open hearts and a drive to make a difference. We have seen volunteers from all over the world just to support our veterans. It truly is a very special group of people.”

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with Heroes and Horses?

“Volunteering with Heroes and Horses will impact your life in ways you never thought possible. For me, volunteering has allowed me to know I can make a difference and benefit others. I’ve learned a lot at the ranch and will forever be grateful for my time with the volunteers and staff. I have learned we can’t allow our past to define who we are now. If you are considering volunteering with us, JUST DO IT! “
